Who are we?
Spiritual direction is a ministry of listening – distinct from counseling or coaching – in which a believer offers their prayerful attention to another so the one being heard can increasingly notice and respond to God’s presence in their everyday lives.
At Oakdale Covenant Church, we are committed to incorporating the African American religious experience and tradition into the context of spiritual direction, because we earnestly believe that this ministry is for everyone – including us.
We refer to ourselves as the “Soul Care” ministry, because we are trained (and in-training) spiritual directors dedicated to helping believers care for their souls through deepening their personal relationship with God.

We offer Bible Study classes, contemplative retreats, referrals for individual spiritual direction, and workshops to edify our congregation and community. Join us as we learn the unforced rhythms of grace together (see Matthew 11:30, The Message Translation).

Spiritual Practice Sessions
ONLINE: Monday evenings from 7:00pm – 8:00pm Central Time, September 2026 – May 2027
This year, our focus is journaling and prayer using Bruce Wilkinson’s devotional, Thirty-One Days to Experiencing More of the Blessed Life: The Prayer of Jabez Devotional. Each week, we reflect on one devotional reading and use the journaling prompt to help build the spiritual habit of writing, praying, and noticing God’s work in our lives.
Sessions are free and open to all.

Fall 2026 Soul Care Retreat: “Refreshing Your Soul”
IN PERSON: Saturday October 24, 2026 8:30am – 4:30 pm
Oakdale Covenant Church, 9440 S. Vincennes Ave., Chicago, IL 60620
Join us for a day of learning and practicing ways to refresh your soul, including journaling, musica divina, spiritual direction, and labyrinth walking. Light breakfast, catered lunch, and all supplies are included with registration. All are welcome. Registration cost is choose what you can, $75, $100, or $125.
